For long the Department of Basic Education (DBE) stated that the standard main stream Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement should be followed, but this has proven to be inappropriate for learners with a severe intellectual disability. Then, in 2013 the Department of Basic Education decided to develop a Differentiated Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement suitable for learners with a severe intellectual disability. As an experienced teacher for learners with a severe intellectual disability, Dr. C Vlachos was honoured to be approached by the DBE to participate in the very meaningful work of developing a Differentiated CAPS document for learners with a severe intellectual disability. She is also now involved with the training of teachers on the content of the new Differentiated CAPS document.
Teachers will need resources to instruct the content effectively. The lack of LTSM may impact on the teaching of the Differentiated CAPS. It is against this background that SATeacher will develop LTSM based on the Differentiated CAPS.
SATeacher has been focussing on resource development and training since 2003 to empower teachers across the country, from rural public schools to highly sophisticated urban schools. The experience gained from working on appointment of the Ministry of Education, the Robben Island Museum, the Cradle of Humankind and others, gives SATeacher the competence to develop the following materials.
Life Skills resources for SID learners grade R to 5
To develop high quality appropriate resources SATeacher will develop the materials over a period of 1 year. The topics, according to the curriculum, will be released at least two weeks before the topics are implemented. See the topic table below.
SATeacher will also add some mathematics activities in line with the curriculum under the appropriate topics.
